What is Women Health?

Women’s health physiotherapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy that focuses on the health and well-being of women, particularly in relation to their reproductive, pelvic, and sexual health.

Women’s health physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat a range of conditions that affect women’s physical and sexual health, including:

  1. Pelvic floor dysfunction: Weakness, tightness, or pain in the muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowels.
  2. Incontinence: Loss of bladder or bowel control, including stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and fecal incontinence.
  3. Prolapse: Descent of the uterus, bladder, or rectum into the vagina.
  4. Pregnancy and postpartum issues: Back pain, pelvic pain, and other musculoskeletal problems related to pregnancy and childbirth.
  5. Sexual health:  Vaginal laxity or looseness can impact a woman’s quality of life by affecting sexual performance and intimacy with a partner.  This can occur after childbirth, aging or hormonal changes.
  6. Breast Cancer rehabilitation: Physiotherapy to help with lymphedema, a swelling that is related to cancer treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

At Eltonteknik Physiotherapy, we use a range of techniques, including:

  1. Pelvic floor retraining: We use Kegel exercises to help strengthen the muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowels.
  2. Pressure Pelvic Floor Biofeedback: We can test the strength and endurance of your pelvic floor muscles accurately with pressure biofeedback and provide real time readings during your Kegel exercises.
  3. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation: We use electrical impulses to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles from pads attached to the pelvic area, or indirectly via neural stimulation at the ankle.
  4. Exercise programs: Using Kegel weighted balls, we tailor exercise programs to help improve strength, endurance and overall physical function.
  5. Lymphatic massage: A specific massage technique to stimulate the lymphatic system and help reduce swelling and promote circulation in individuals with lymphedema.
  6. Education and advice: Providing women with information and advice on how to manage their symptoms, prevent injury, and promote overall health and well-being.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, consider consulting a women’s health physiotherapist for personalized advice and treatment.
